This is a preliminary sketch for the drama by Robert Harling that opened at NY’s WPA Theatre in March 1987. Not unlinke Clare Luce’s The Women, it has an all-female cast of characters who inhabit a single set: Truvy’s Beauty Salon somewhere in NW Louisiana, where they discuss their relationships with their men and, of course, with each other. This is the only example I have of this poster, but, needless to say, in the final version, I made the character more comical and soft and Southern, rather than an icy Joan Crawford wearing her curlers with a vengeance. It later became a successful star-encrusted movie.
